JLPT N5 passed

Frederic

I wanted to go for the JLPT N5 in Dec 2010 but didn’t find the time that year. The exam also changed format in 2010, so I decided to wait one more year and focus on the regular classes in the mean time.

Honestly, before taking the preparation class for the JLPT, I believed that going solely to the regular classes would be enough to secure a pass grade. I realized after just one preparation class how wrong I was! If you want to succeed to this exam, you can’t approach it in the same way you would approach a regular class.

This is where the preparation class really shines: it is handcrafted to prepare you to handle the type of questions you’ll face during the exam. The pace of the class is very high, and you get to practice in real exam conditions, so that there is no surprise on the day of the exam. Also, I found it was an excellent way to review previous levels’ grammar and vocabulary. Since the exam covers grammar, vocabulary, reading, kanji and listening comprehension, practicing all of these in a very structured and systematic way during the prep classes was a big help. After completing the class, I felt much more confidant I could make it.

I’m really glad I opted for taking this class prior to the N5 exam, as I’m sure it helped greatly in achieving a pass grade. I definitely recommend this class to anyone serious about taking the JLPT exam. I’ll be back next October for the N4 prep class!

JLPT N5 passed

Christina

After completing Level 6 with Aitas, I thought that it was time to attempt my first JLPT. After much apprehension, I finally decided to go for it. I was happy that Aitas offered a JLPT N5 prep class. The JLPT class was an intense class in an enjoyable environment. The JLPT class fully prepared me for the N5 exam. I found that the prep class was not only good for those who are intending to take the exam but also a good refresher for my previous classes. We were given homework each week. We had mocks exams which tested our vocabulary, grammar and kanji. I especially liked the listening practice which I find quite challenging.
If you are contemplating on taking the JLPT, I would recommend taking the Aitas JLPT prep class. You’ll find homework and exams are actually fun.

What is the key to succeed in the JLPT exam?

The key to succeeding in the JLPT is a combination of studying grammar, improving listening skills, and most especially, practicing repeatedly with actual past JLPT exams.

How was the JLPT Prep Class?

The JLPT class was wonderful because it motivated me to study and kept me on track with preparing for the exam. If I had a busy week and hadn’t been able to put in much study time at home, I always made sure to at least do my homework for the Prep Class, because I didn’t want to let my teacher down. Just attending the class and seeing my classmates each week gave me renewed motivation to keep at it. The most helpful aspect of the class, for me, was that we practiced with actual past tests every week. Our work was marked, returned, and we always went over each and every question, so that not only did we know what the correct answer was, but we understood why that answer was correct. It was very encouraging to see my marks on the practice tests slowly, but steadily, improve as the course progressed. The other extremely valuable component was the listening practice we did. For me, listening comprehension is the most challenging aspect of Japanese, so the confidence I gained by practicing with so many listening exams in class was invaluable.

Any advice to the students who are going to take the test?

If you are usually nervous taking formal exams, the JLPT Prep Class is very helpful, because you are exposed to so many actual past tests. When you come to take the real exam, everything from the types of questions, the format of the listening portion, even the style of answer sheet is already familiar, so you don’t have to worry about any of that, and you can focus clearly on the exam itself. If you find it difficult to motivate yourself to study on your own, the class is also ideal, because it gives you the chance to make friends with others who are working towards the same goal. You can share study tips, talk about strategies and motivate each other. And of course, on test day, having your classmates write along with you makes it seem less daunting. A large group of us even went out for a celebratory lunch after we wrote the exam!

I highly recommend this class: it was well designed, gave me plenty of practice and feedback with real past exams, and motivated me every week to continue to work towards my goal.

What is the key to succeed in the JLPT exam?

In my opinion, in order to succeed one has to take a JLPT prep class. The test has its own structure and it’s important to get to know it and get used to it – including the time limit of each section. One might be able to sing every song of Utada Hikaru or watch dorama every day. It’s not the same – it is a test and therefore should be taken seriously.

How was the JLPT Prep Class?

It was very well structured and taught in a friendly and yet very professional manner. The Class helped me reduce the level of stress because i knew what to expect. Thanks to the tests that we took during the class, i could see where i was standing and thus my expectations were realistic – more or less.

What is the key to succeed in the JLPT exam?

Lots of exercise and review. Review must be done outside the class. In the class, we just exercise, exercise and more exercise, with a little bit of review. But try not to stress a lot. So in a nutshell: lots of review and exercise, relax a little bit as the test day approaches, and do our on the test day.

How was the JLPT Prep Class?

The prep class was great and really helpful. I did a lot of exercise that I could’ve done on my own. Teachers gave a lot of useful hints on test strategy which helped increasing our score. Also, classmates added more motivations. Last but not least, despite of the weight of JLPT test itself, learning ambience in class was totally fun.

What is the key to succeed in the JLPT exam?

for the grammer / reading and writing / vocabulary section there is really no special technique, you just have to read and listen to a lot of japanese, either textbooks, magazines, japanese shows or even visit japanese website over the internet, only by repetition then you be able to get familiarized with the japanese grammer and then be able to choose the most correct verbs and adjectives in the test.

As for the listen section, in my opinion, just watching anime or shows are not enough. The best way to study for it is to listen and talk a lot in japanese as the passages in the test are quite fast, sometimes it is ok just to listen for key words but really, you should be aiming to understand most of the passage as the answers are very similar to one another (in the more difficult questions). As such, attending the Aitas japanese conversation club as much as possible will be a great help.

As for Kanji, there is no quick way to learn it, it is something that can only be learned through repetition, writing it repeatedly over and over again is actually how chinese students learn chinese kanji, so it will be the same for japanese.

How was the JLPT prep class?

the JLPT prep class was extremely helpful, chances are that i would of failed the test if i didn’t take the prep course. Being able to practice previous exams and revisit grammars that i have either forgotten or haven’t learned in the class helped filled a lot of the gaps. studying with classmates help too, i actually studied with some of them outside of the course.

Any advice on the students who are going to take the test?

before you decide on taking the test, you should do a quick examination on your japanese like going to a conversation class or have a chat with either kyoko or masa sensei in japanese, just so you can have an idea on where your weaknesses are; and then take the prep class to get even better at japanese.

Others

remember that the prep class is special course where it condenses all of your previous japanese classes into a 3 month course, so it is not unusual for you to feel lost from time to time, but remember those sections and then study them when you get home. don’t rely purely on the course to get you through the exams, you best chance to succeed is to study outside of the class as well as attending the classes.
